Ship scrapping accelerates ahead of Panama Canal launch

The number of container vessels sent to the breakers’ yard so far this year will shortly eclipse the number of box ships demolished in the whole of 2015, and in terms of teu capacity, it is already way ahead. According to the latest data from shipbroker Braemar ACM, the total demolished year-to-date figure now stands at 72 vessels for 243,000 teu, compared to 85 vessels for 187,500 teu at the same time last year.
